They Don't Care About Us

MyWii Blog

Written By Stephen Heller

The journey of an Australian Wii Gamer has been a long and bumpy road, full of ridiculously late release dates (RE: Super Smash Bros Brawl) lack of “hardcore” titles, and things don’t seem to be shaping up to brighter horizons. Nintendo have just announced news regarding release dates for the highly anticipated Punch Out!!! and the new racing title Excitebots

That news is there is no release date, in fact the games aren’t even being picked up by local retailers. Excitebots sales have been dismal at best in the USA, so Nintendo Australia has made the judgement not to bring it into the country.

Punch Out!!! devotees will have to travel to their nearest JB-Hi Fi store as they will be the only stockists of the game in Australia. Rose Lappin, managing director of of Nintendo Australia issued this statement.

To be honest we didn’t have a lot of requests for the game,” she continued. “There’s a few people… there’s a lot of noise but not a lot of sales, that sort of thing. However there was one retailer that was chasing it, so that’s why we’ve decided to go that way. Of course, if it continues and consumers want it then that’s what we’re here for. At the end of the day if we don’t support consumers then we don’t have a business. We’re certainly here to work with what people want.”

Nintendo sure are giving people what they want....IF they live near a JB-Hi Fi store. For those of us in rural areas who don’t have a JB-Hi Fi within 100kms from our homes, it’s going to result in an inconvenient process to get the game.

It begs the question will this become a common trend with Nintendo First Party releases? Will we be faced with late releases, or in some cases no release at all, totally dictated by sales in the USA?

Is the global economic crisis putting so much pressure on the industry that it’s harder for publishers to take risks? Instead of taking these risks will publishers just choose to not release games on our shores to avoid the possibility of bad sales?

Due to Nintendo’s strict region coding importing titles aren’t as easy as it is for PC or the Playstation 3. If this becomes a popular trend many Wii gamers could miss out on their most anticipated games, due to sales in another country....

Do Nintendo really care about us?

It is becoming a joke that Nintendo Australia make these kind of decisions based on other countries consumers. But I suppose being such a small country we are kinda insignificant to Nintendo's world domination even though I believe we have some of the most dedicated and passionate fans. This is why we all get peed off when this keeps happening to us. Well at least Punch Out will be sold somewhere, but it's interesting to see that JB, according to Nintendo Australia, were the only retailer calling out for the game!?!?!

I agree, this is a joke.
Australia needs a lot better treatment than it currently does, and Nintendo aren't the only ones guilty of ignoring us, a recent PS2 Kingdom Hearts game (RE: Chain of Memories) will never come here, and neither will Street Fighter 3 Third Strike (but we did get SVC Chaos exclusive instead... but that game sucks)

if nintendo america had advertised both of them we would have gotten them sooner, punch out got ads after it came out, excitebots hasn't had any that i know of, they would have should better

you cant expect a game that releases with little to no fanfare to sell well

Something doesn't seem right. Other companies are giving low selling games a chance in other regions and they have much more at risk unlike a recession-proof company like Nintendo. Games like Little King's Story and Let's Tap sold badly in Japan yet there were companies willing to bring those games to the rest of the world. Me thinks Nintendo is grooming the Australian audience for more mini-game collections.

This sounds like a case study of market penetration done wrong. I also blame the retailers, especially those franchisees, for not knowing how to collect feedback from their customers, especially the gamers as to what future releases they would like to see. Moreover, I am not surprised if most of them have scant knowledge of the game development industries.

I hardly consider it a recession issue, with the increase of consoles and games sales during this period. Just poor planning on the part of both the distributors and the retailers. Risks can always be offset by knowledge gathered from surveys and test marketing. Distributors just cbf with the latter.

Nintendo is treating their core gamers like **** anyway, whatever country they are in.

Truth is, they do not give a **** anymore, why bother sending games to Australia when they are making ****loads off of "Casual Gamers"

Yet they treat 'region free' as a dirty word.

Cant have it both ways.

Not being able to play certain PS3 or Xbox 360 games is one thing. Not being able to play wii games on my wii is just stupid.

Maybe the future of gaming is to have a bigger hard drive and a download service.

I think I might sell my Wii before it's too late. It's obvious that Nintendo's neglect of the traditional gamer has finally started to show. People got sick of all the other shovelware **** so when they finally start to make "proper" games there's nobody left to buy them - except for us poor suckers who have stuck it out!

Its not odd they look at the american market as a gauge. Only high rating tv shows make it to aus. No different to games, plus Australian companies other than nintendo, like Atari as an example, licence the games to be distributed in Aus. So nintendo doesnt bring it out, and no one else brings it out, maybe its just some smart buisness on there behalf

If they released every title every released here they wouldnt survive, then there would be even less of a market to buy from. We simple dont have the market power for that.

On the other hand, Nintendo have build there company and fan base around games like excitebots and should definatly give any first party title a go.

Thq specifically set up office in australia because they realised the american and australian markets are so very different. There case in point at the time was sponge bob is massive in the states, and is no where near as popular in australia. So there would be no point releasing a huge wave of sponge bob related games, merch etc into the market because it would not succeed as well as say, a game the australian office made soecifically targeted at australian pop culture.

alot of people have to learn just because you want something doesnt mean you can always have it, and shouldnt carry on when they cant, be an adult and just accept the decision and move on
