Better than Deadly Alliance, on par with Deception - 9/10

After the glory of Mortal Kombat 2, the franchise underwent a period of mediocrity. MK:3 and the other various spin-off's were very average, being less dark and more cartoonish than before. MK:4 however was a fairly enjoyable foray into the 3D-world of fighting. MK:Deadly Alliance signalled the return of MK to its former glory. This successful return continued with Deception.

MK:Armageddon is the definitive MK of our time. With every single fighter and boss from every vs. MK game (even meat!), all your favourites are here to be chosen. Unlike previous MK games, playing as a boss doesn't give you a ridiculous advantage. Armageddon throws away one of the 3 fighting styles, leaving only one combat style, and a weapon style. This configuration works well, and simplifies the game appropriately.

The gesture system involves waving the Wii remote while holding down the B button for special moves. This system works much better than using gestures for moving or other essential functions. Thankfully, the game implements a 3-Combo Breaker system which prevents the unlimited (and annoying) use of breakers.

Now to fatalities. The new fatality system involves chaining together specific fatality moves using the gesture system. Unlike previous MK games where you keep repeating the same 1 or 2 fatalities for the character youve chosen, this system allows you to chose from scores of chains and finisher moves. You are able to link a maximum of 9 chain moves, and finish with a finisher move for a 10 move rampage.

An example: rip out heart, rip out brain, rip out thigh bone, rip out ribs, knee to head, punch, pull out sword, chop one arm, chop other arm, impale, rip off head.

This keeps the fatality system fresh and challenging. There are also great arena fatalities and quite a number of them. This just involved a hard punch accross a red line on the ground of these arenas.

The konquest mode is a worthy single player mode, exploring the central storyline of the game. As you fight your way killing bad guys, you unlock hidden characters, music, and arenas.

The only gripes I have with this game, are the lack of suicides seen in Deception, and some chatacters that not only look identical as in Deadly Alliance, but have the exact same special moves.

Overall, an extremely gory, fun, feature packed game that has enourmous replayability value especially trying to master the Kreate-A-Fatality system.

9/10
