You can see it's sharper and textures are more clear i.e. the wood grain or the grass looks a lot better in Zelda.

480p sure looks good.

but does anyone know if having component cables WITHOUT progressive scan makes a significant difference?

i've got a 68cm LG tv with component inputs but NO progressive scan. just wondering whether it's worth the 50 bucks.

From my experience of using component cables with the Gamecube, I can tell you that it did make a difference, even with the games that did not support Progressive Scan. Resident Evil 4 for example. I did a test - I connected the Gamecube with composite cables to my 81cm LCD, and the picture was blurry as hell, felt like I was wearing beer googles. (Side note: I used the ZOOM feature on the TV - RE4 is in widescreen, but it is letterboxed, not anamorphic)

Then I plugged in the component cables, the picture was a lot sharper and more defined, a definite improvement over composite, but the picture would have been just a bit better defined if the game supported progressive scan.

For the low low price of just $49.95. Or go to eBay and pay US$150 if you want them now LOL

No, its not that bad. Just people out there who own flash 101cm HD LCD TVs want their Wii to have the best picture as possible, so because there is a huge shortage they are willing to pay top dollar.

But really people with normal CRT TVs will be content with the normal composite connection, I would be if I still had my ol' 61cm TV. But I don't, and composite looks crap on my LCD. I know from using the Gamecube, thats why I got component cable for that

You might want to check out the guide that Ravi made up. It should clear things up.

Not worth it on a CRT TV. LCD or Plamsa or rear projection I would insist it is a must.

It makes a difference for sure .. but 50 big ones for a cord is still too much Bugger off nintendo if you think im paying 50 bux for some wires just because youve denied it to us !!

There are about 3 companies making third party component cables but they will be released closer to christmas in the states and who knows when here

Thanks for posting the comparison! I have a 68cm flat screen 100hz crt tv and i'll certainly be running it with the component cables. $50 is pretty steep though, hopefully the 3rd party ones are cheaper!

Last i heard, all the 3rd party cables were a little dearer (around $10) because they claimed to be premium HD cables and offered true component. Talk is that the nintedo component cables are a mix of composite and component or so those trying to make their own component cable from the composite cables say. They have to add extra pins in using paper clips.

I'm guessing your not using a PAL Gamecube?

Well, the word is used, not using, as I traded it in to get a Wii. And my console was PAL, but my copy of Resident Evil 4 is NTSC, and I have a disc (Freeloader, should ring bells with some people) that allows me to play it.

The Gamecube component cable I still have was imported from Japan, as it has Japanese on the box.

It's hard to judge the difference solely based on the screenshots. You notice it's a little sharper in the component cable versions, but that's about it.

The REAL difference is much more noticeable, and something you'll only be able to see by testing the two cables on the same TV. Consensus seems to be that $50 won't be worth it for standard CRT TVs, but well worth it for those with (larger) LCD/Plasma TVs (even if progressive scan isn't supported).

That is more on projectors and only when you are playing something for a long time which has a non-changing image such as a speedo in the corner.

You'll have to decide whether it's worth $50 or not, but component is significantly better than component even at 68cm.

BTW... CRT, LCD, Plasma - it makes no difference when the point is comparing cable types. They will all suffer/benefit the same.
