Wii Technical Details

The Nintendo Wii is designed to be affordable, less noisy and small in size, it will be available at launch in glossy white. Measuring only 21.6cm long, 15.7cm wide and 4.4cm thick, roughly 3 stacked DVDs. It can be positioned horizontally or vertically.

The console is not as powerful as the Xbox 360 or the PS3, but it is about twice as powerful the Nintendo GameCube. Here are some interesting specs:

  • 729 MHz IBM PowerPC "Broadway" CPU
  • 243 MHz ATI "Hollywood" GPU
  • 24MBs "main" 1T-SRAM
  • 64MBs other 1T-SRAM
  • 512MBs internal flash memory
  • 3MBs texture memory on GPU
  • Built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi capability
  • One SD memory card bay
  • AV multi-port: S-video, composite, component
  • Analog (left/right) audio / DPLII
  • Four GameCube controller ports
  • Two GameCube Memory Pak slots
  • Two USB 2.0 ports
  • Compatible with up to four wireless Wii-motes
  • Self-loading media drive
  • Accepts 12cm Wii and 8cm GCN discs (No DVD capability)

Nintendo introduced the Virtual Console allowing users to play classic games via emulation, supporting beloved consoles such as SNES, NES, N64, Mega Drive and the MSX. This means most of the classic Nintendo games over the past 20 years will be able to run on the Wii. Australian prices are yet to be announced.

Nintendo has introduced WiiConnect24, an an always-on feature. The service will be awake throughout the night, using the WiiChannel to deliver current new game downloads, current news reports and weather forecasts.

Wii has great built-in WIFI support, providing access to online games and internet surfing.

Traditional LAN cables can be connected to the Wii by using a USB adapter. Wii is also able to connect and interact with the popular Nintendo DS handheld.

To sum it all up, here is a video of it all :)

I am very interested to know what (if any) wifi security is supported (WEP, WPA, WPA2)? It''s the one thing that let me down for my DS

I guess it would need to have some sort of security on it to be able to access the network, wouldn''t it? You''d think so, especially seeing as it''s on 24/7. Good question though, they''ve never really spoken about it, or all THAT much about WiiConnect24.

Another question Do we know what type of batteries we should buy for the wii-mote?

I noticed in the latest IGN video the guy said, "battery pack"... huh? well I hope it's rechargeable!

Edit: the second part

yeah... looking closely it has what seems like double A connectors... don't know why he said battery pack.

regardless, some decent lithium batteries should last a heap of time.

The DS supports 64bit and 128bit WEP.

Ofcourse the Wii will support the same AND possibly WPA. My bets are with just WEP though.

That's what I'm worried about, WEP would lower the security for the rest of the network. Guess i could get another router just for the Nintendo consoles and firewall it to heck!!

Yeah good point, WEP isn't all that safe, even when implemented with MAC filtering and BSS broadcasting disabled. And using a separate AP for the Wii is impractical.

A bit off topic here

I would love to pre-order a Wii. But i know with Nintendo, if you wait just a little bit longer the always release the same product in a package of some kind or different color. I bought a DS with Nintendogs, then a few months later truth have it "Nintendo DS Lite" heh ah well. So to the Wii, I'm not a fan of White, any ideas if or when the Wii will ship in alternate colors, i was hoping for Black.

Cheers,

There's an error in your specs; it has 64MB 700MHz GDDR3 extra RAM, not 1T-SRAM.
