Protöthea is another top-down side-scrolling space shooter, but with a twist. Your ship has free form movement, which means you can shoot 360 degrees at all angles. It is a remake of the shooter of the same name released in 2005 for PC.
There is no real story in Protöthea, you are simply a lone ship floating through space shooting enemies as they appear from all directions. The game features dynamic-AI, so you can never predict the patterns they will come in. Your ship has a large selection of weapons, ranging from a blue and green laser, to a flamethrower, and the typical bombs. Unfortunately, your weapon can burn-out and overheat, forcing you to wait until it cools.
The control scheme actually works quite well. You rotate the ship and aim with the remote, push A to fire and B to bomb, while moving it with the control stick. It delivers smooth performance after you adjust to it.
Protöthea features 8 stages which takes 3 hours to complete (!), and can get quite boring as the stages progress. The game doesn’t feature any real motivation to sit through the whole time – after you defeat it boss it goes straight onto the next stage in silence. Regardless, shooter fans may enjoy this title for a different experience.
