After a while they will get a boost.
This is a powerful boost and can be used to muscle past people.

Quick Start your Kart/Bike
Listen for the beeps. After the second beep, and just as the number starts to fade, press and hold the accelerator.
There are two types of boosts: A quick one and a slower one. The closer to the beep, the faster you will boost.
Beware because if you hold accelerate too soon you may spin out.
